Here is some new exciting news
Home Depot, best known for its giant stores filled with tools, lumber and home remodeling products, is buying home decor and textiles online retailer called The Company Store.
The move is a way for the Atlantabased homeimprovement giant to grow its online presence in an era when Amazon sells everything from soup to nutsandbolts.
The terms of the deal, which closed on Tuesday, were not released. The acquisition from Hanover Direct doesn't include the five retail stores.
The acquisition of The Company Store provides product development and sourcing capabilities to help us expand our online decor business into broader categories across the entire home, CEO Craig Menear said in a statement.
Founded in 1911, The Company Store represents what Home Depot's move into what the industry calls soft home meaning pillows, not plywood. Home Depot stores presently carry some of those items, but they are typically not the feature.
According to Credit Suisse research analyst Seth Sigman, decororiented merchandise, like flooring, lighting and window treatments, account for approximately $25 billion or 25% of Home Depot's sales, but decor alone is just $2.9 billion or 3%.
Soft home and decor remains highly fragmented, creating an opportunity for Home Depot, he wrote in a research note, adding that it also will help the company appeal to a new type of shopper. Our quick analysis highlights The Company Store?s different customer base, including heavier skew to females, higher income and older, overall most comparable to Bed Bath & Beyond. Samantha Stone, associate director of S&P Global Ratings, said Home Depot had previously announced plans to expand into home decor.
As real estate continues to do well, people are shopping and decorating their homes. More people are investing in their homes. It?s very much a growth area for them, she said.
