line and I got an answerHere it is We cant do anything about it theyThe formation of a perfectly white japan ground and of the first degree of hardness has always been difficult to attain in the art of japanning as there are few or no substances that can be so dissolved as to form a very hard varnish coat without being so darkened in the process as to quite degrade or spoil the whiteness of the colour The following process however is said to give a composition which yields a very near approach to a perfect white ground Take flake white or white lead washed and ground up with the sixth of its weight of starch and then dried temper it properly for spreading with mastic varnish made thus Take 5 oz of mastic in powder and put it into a proper vessel with 1 lb of spirits of turpentine let them boil at a gentle heat till the mastic be dissolved and if there appear to be any turbidity strain off the solution through flannel Apply this intimate and homogeneous mixture on the body to be japanned the surface of which has been suitably prepared either with or without the priming then varnish it over with five or six coats of the following varnish Provide any quantity of the best seedlac and pick out of it all the clearest and whitest grains take of this seedlac 12 lb and of gum anime 34 lb pulverize the mixture to a coarse powder and dissolve in a gallon of methylated spirits and strain off the clear varnish The seedlac will give a slight tint to this varnish but it cannot be omitted where the japanned surface must be hard though where a softer surface will serve the purpose the proportion of seedlac may be diminished and a little turpentine oleoresin added to the gum anime to take off the brittleness A very good varnish entirely free from brittleness may it is said be formed by dissolving gum anime in old nut or poppy oil which must be made to boil gently when the gum is put into it After being diluted with turps the white ground may be applied in this varnish and then a coat or two of the varnish itself may be applied over it These coats however take a long time to dry and owing to its softer nature this japanned surface is more readily injured than that yielded by the shellac varnishInner Nature of the Mind Not Revealed by IntrospectionWe are not to be too greatly discouraged if even by introspection we cannot discover exactly what the mind is No one knows what electricity is though nearly everyone uses it in one form or another We study the dynamo the motor and the conductors through which electricity manifests itself We observe its effects in light heat and mechanical power and so learn the laws which govern its operations But we are almost as far from understanding its true nature as were the ancients who knew nothing of its uses The dynamo does not create the electricity but only furnishes the5 conditions which make it possible for electricity to manifest itself in doing the worlds work Likewise the brain or nervous system does not create the mind but it furnishes the machine through which the mind works We may study the nervous system and learn something of the conditions and limitations under which the mind operates but this is not studying the mind itself As in the case of electricity what we know about the mind we must learn through the activities in which it manifests itselfthese we can know for they are in the experience of all It is then only by studying these processes of consciousness that we come to know the laws which govern the mind and its development What it is that thinks and feels and wills in us is too hard a problem for us hereindeed has been too hard a problem for the philosophers through the ages But the thinking and feeling and willing we can watch as they occur and hence seems leaving me to eat my own wordsBut Charles VIII continued his road not without some uneasiness The sight of the young prince on his deathbed had moved him deeply for at the bottom of his heart he was convinced that Ludovico Sforza was his murderer and a murderer might very well be a traitor He was going forward into an unfamiliar country with a declared enemy in front of him and a doubtful friend behind he was now at the entrance to the mountains and as his army had no store of provisions and only lived from hand to mouth a forced delay however short would mean famine In front of him was Fivizzano nothing it is true but a village surrounded by walls but beyond Fivizzano lay Sarzano and Pietra Santa both of them considered impregnable fortresses worse than this they were coming into a part of the country that was especially unhealthy in October had no natural product except oil and even procured its own corn from neighbouring provinces it was plain that a whole army might perish there in a few days either from scarcity of food or from the unwholesome air both of which were more disastrous than the impediments offered at every step by the nature of the ground The situation was grave but the pride of Piero dei Medici came once more to the rescue of the fortunes of Charles lover hu VIIIAlthough Alfonso had clearly seen through the motives of Pieros coldness and Alexander had not even given him the trouble of seeking his he was none the less obliged to bow to the will of his allies leaving the one to defend the Apennines against the French and helping the other to shake himself free of his neighbours in the Romagna Consequently he pressed on the siege of Ostia and added to Virginios forces which already amounted to two hundred men of the papal army a body of his own light horse this little army was to be stationed round about Rome and was to enforce obedience from the Colonnas The rest of his troops Alfonso divided into two parties one he left in the hands of his son Ferdinand with orders to scour the Romagna and worry the petty princes into levying and supporting the contingent they had promised while with the other he himself defended the physical or mental depends on our ability to form habits Habit holds fast to the skill already attained while practice or intelligence makes ready for the next step in advance Could we not form habits we should improve but little in our way of doing things no matter how many times we did them over We should now be obliged to go through the same71 bungling process of dressing ourselves as when we first learned it as children Our writing would proceed as awkwardly in the high school as the primary our eating as adults would be as messy and wide of the mark as when we were infants and we should miss in a thousand ways the motor skill that now seems so easy and natural All highly skilled occupations and those demanding great manual dexterity likewise depend on our habitforming power for the THISAt the same time overtures had been made to Alfonso of Aragon heir presumptive to the crown of Naples to arrange a marriage between Dana Sancia his illegitimate daughter and Goffreda the popes third son but as the old Ferdinand wanted to make the best bargain he could out of it he dragged on the negotiations as long as possible urging that the two children were not of marriageable age and so highly honoured as he felt in such a prospective alliance there was no hurry about the engagement Matters stopped at this point to the great annoyance of Alexander VI who saw through this excuse
