An accurate and scholar-like [xxxiii] knowledge of German would, no doubt, suffice for the translation of historical or scientific works. But in order tofind our way through the intricate mazes ofmetaphysical arguments, a quick perception of what is meant by the sign-posts, I mean the adverbs and particles, and a natural hiling for idiomatic ways of speech, seem to me almost indispensable.
