NEW YORK Three security contractors including two Americans were released by Iraqi Army forces Tuesday after they were held for more than two weeks, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security announced as he demanded a full report on the episode.Republican Peter King identified the men as Army veteran Alex Antiohos of West Babylon, N.Y., National Guardsman Jonas March of Savannah, Georgia and Kevin Fisher of Fiji.King said they were working for a security firm when Iraqi Ministry of Defense officials rejected paperwork prepared on their behalf by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and began holding them on Dec. 9.The men weren't charged with any crimes and King said it appeared that the men were not injured. He said Antiohos, who lives on Long Island, spoke to his wife Tuesday evening, and he was expected to be home later this week."She said he seems to be doing well," he said.King said they were released after efforts by his office, the State Depart

APDec. 22, 2011: Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul speaks during a campaign stop in Dubuque, Iowa. For months, Ron Paul was by turns ignored, tolerated and occasionally even praised by his opponents in the Republican presidential race. But with the libertarian-leaning candidate surging to the front of the field in Iowa with less than a week to go before the caucuses, Paul's extensive record of outside-the-GOP-mainstream comments and views is coming under withering attack by his competitors. While some of his fellow Republicans have practically adopted his unwavering criticism of the Federal Reserve and Washington's spending habits over the course of the campaign, they are picking apart other aspects of his record -- in particular singling out his foreign policy views as dangerously isolationist.Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who mostly had stayed away from commenting on Paul's campaign, took a swipe Wednesday at the Texas congressman's hands-off at

ng his coffin passed. Some struggled to get past police holding back the crowd."How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."The dramatic scenes of grief showed how effectively North Korea built a personality cult around Kim Jong Il despite chronic food shortages and decades of economic hardship.A large challenge for North Korea's propaganda apparatus will be "to counter the public's perception that the new leader is a spoiled child of privilege," said Brian Myers, an expert on North Korean propaganda at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea."Having Kim Jong Un trudge mournfully next to the hearse in terrible weather was a very clever move," Myers said.Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was well under way. The young man, who is in late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "su

STAMFORD, Conn. A Christmas morning fire that killed a couple and three of their grandchildren was devastating to firefighters who rushed into the engulfed home twice frantically looking for the victims before they were beaten back by the flames.Stamford officials were offering counseling to the firefighters."After 37 and a half years, 38 years, on the job, you're never prepared for anything like this," acting fire Chief Antonio Conte said Tuesday. "It's heart-breaking. I had to re-call 70 firefighters today for debriefing, and most of them broke down."Authorities on Tuesday described frantic, futile attempts to save the three girls and their grandparents after embers in a bag of discarded fireplace ashes started the accidental fire at the grand waterfront house, which was being renovated.Of the seven people in the home, only two survived: the girls' mother, a New York City fashion advertising executive; and a family friend who had worked on the home as a contr

An Italian oil tanker was hijacked close to the coast of Oman early Tuesday morning in an area where Somali pirates are known to operate, AFP reported. The ship, which is owned by Marnavi, was reportedly carrying 18 people. The Italian navy was informed of the incident and the company has been in touch with the foreign ministry, the report said. There were six Italians, five Ukrainians and seven Indians onboard when the ship came under attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The ship was carrying a cargo of caustic soda to the Mediterranean. On Dec. 21, another Italian oil tanker was freed after being in pirate captivity for more than 10 months after a ransom was paid, the report said.Ransoms for tankers often reach into the millions of dollars. The long coastline of war-ravaged Somalia provides a perfect haven for pirate gangs preying on shipping off the East African coast. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

APDec. 24, 2011: U.S. Army 1st Cavalry 3rd Brigade soldiers march onto the parade grounds upon their return home from deployment in Iraq, at Fort Hood, Texas.WASHINGTON Americans probably will not be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq, and it is not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation's fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War.Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven't been asked to plan one. Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Obama at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could be seen as
